Client: Wolfies Carousel Bar
June 5, 2023
Wolfie's Carousel Bar is located in downtown San Diego, at the northern end of Little Italy, with the most iconic centerpiece around. A carnival-size carousel with a bar for a center axis, and instead of plaster zoo animals we've got pale-blush bar seats on pony poles. Originally built and immortalized in 1881 by German carousel master carver and builder, Charles I.D. Looff — nicknamed “Wolfie” by friends, known for his intricate and whimsical hand-carved carousels and amusement rides. This concept has been done before, most notably with the famous Carousel Bar in New Orleans—which was the original spark of the idea. But Wolfie’s is very different; providing an immersive and whimsical experience melding Parisian glamour with the romance of the New Orleans’ French Quarter, and it just so happens to be inspired by Hunter S. Thompson’s pharmaceutical-lit classic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
