Davis Ink (staging.davisinkltd.com), a leading Southern California interior design firm responsible for some of the most unique nightclub and hospitality venues, has announced the completion of its latest design project at the Grass Skirt tiki bar in Pacific Beach, San Diego. “Our client is known for having the coolest restaurants, bars, and lounges in town and asked that we create a new ‘hot spot’ based on the reinterpretation of the classic tiki bar concept,” said Davis Krumins of Davis Ink. “Since we at Davis Ink thrive on creating funky and fun environments, we were thrilled to be chosen as part of a team that pushes the boundaries and encourages thinking in a totally nontraditional way.” The goal was to create an incredibly fun, positive, and socially interactive dream world…an environment that is 100% about fun and celebration. Tiki is about ritual, presentation, and the process of preparing and consuming exotic-themed drinks and food. David Ink therefore worked very closely with the bartending and food staff in order to ‘showcase’ the entire experience. “From a design perspective, we wanted to create an authentic tiki environment in a contemporary way,” added Krumins. “We incorporated a fine balance between authentic tiki and progressive 2016 design by taking classic materials, artifacts, and lighting, and then reconfiguring them into completely new ‘never have been seen before’ ways.”

The entire back bar wall was designed consisting of classic random orange and red rectangular tile in a vertical brick pattern that flanks a central black lava rock bottle display. A series of 16 gold plated pineapple head skulls (inside custom front lit wood frames) were created and placed in a grid pattern on the orange wall. This created a creepy, but cool and highly dramatic ‘wow factor’ feature catching the attention of patrons as they enter. In traditional tiki fashion, a diamond pattern was created with split bamboo seams, and Edison bulbs were then centered within the diamond patterned grid resulting in an extremely avant-garde wall feature.

Davis Ink also wanted to incorporate new technology into the design and to take advantage of special effects, adding a futuristic essence to the lighting, sound, and fire features. For example, the entrance to the Grass Skirt is through a secret refrigerator door located inside the kitchen of an adjoining Poke restaurant. Upon opening the door, fog is released within a lava rock tunnel. A projector then shoots out hula girl images that fill the entire entry.

Other incredible features include a 23-foot-tall custom tiki with VIP seating inside the open mouth, a 15-foot-tall tiki god fire feature, and a 28-foot wide backlit acrylic wall featuring an erupting volcano, a topless hula girl, and a Hawaiian sunset. “We loved our experience working with Davis Ink,” said Jillian Donovan, managing partner of SDCM Restaurant Group. “We’ve done several projects with many different designers and the Davis’ team was easily the most professional and organized group we’ve encountered. They handled all aspects, from expectations to delivery seamlessly and continue to support our needs now that the project is finished. When working on large design projects, having a team that is capable as well as creative is indispensable. Davis Ink is a fantastic and enthusiastic bunch. Cannot recommend them enough!”
