San Diego has long been a destination for surf and sand. Now it’s got sophisticated and urbane bars and clubs, too. And what better place to start than at the top—rooftop, that is. Here’s a collection of the best places to freshen up with a little ocean breeze as you enjoy quirky cocktails and stellar cityscapes. You’ll feel like you’re in Rio. Without the jet lag.

Likely the best-known club on the list, Stingaree’s Oasis Bar has been highlighted in The New York Times and made it to Condé Nast Traveler’s “Hot List” this year. Turquoise spa tiles trim the main bar’s underside, and multiple enclosed tent cabanas offer up private rendezvousing (and private TVs). The club’s a haven for the rich and famous (or almost), who like to use their weekends to “make it rain”—dollar bills, that is. Lil’ Jon and Run DMC did so on recent visits. Expect lukewarm, but pretty, wait staff…
